How Coaching Works: Method, Sessions & Contract Meeting | Coaching in Oslo

How I work

The method, the assumptions behind it, what happens in an 80-minute session and how we start.

Method

What coaching is, and what it is not

Coaching is often confused with three other ways of supporting people. In all three, the answers come from someone else.

TeachingA teacher gives you knowledge from a set programme.
ConsultingA consultant tells you what to do.
MentoringA mentor shares their own experience and way of doing things.
Coaching

I do not teach, advise or give you ready answers. I ask questions, and you find your own discoveries and solutions.

“What would work for you?”
Assumptions

The iceberg of change

We work on different levels, based on Robert Dilts' model of logical levels. The deeper we go, the stronger the motivation and the more lasting the change.

A gym membership is a change of environment. The belief “I am someone who takes care of myself” is a change of identity, and that is what makes it last. We often start with behaviour and use questions to go deeper.
